The VFW Speech

By PAM BERNS
Yesterday at a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention, President Bush tied his stay-the-course strategy in Iraq with the war in Vietnam. This is more than ludicrous, considering Bush and Cheney did all they could to avoid serving in Vietnam, while 58,000 other young Americans lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The Iraq War was unnecessary, built on a bogus threat that Saddam was behind the attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11. Any knowledge of the Middle East would tell you that bin Laden reviled Saddam for his secular ways. The two were linked only in Cheney’s mind. The Vietnam War was also unnecessary—started with an inaccurate claim that we were being attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin. How many more troops and civilians need to die in this senseless war?
