Private Military Contractors

By PAM BERNS
Illinois Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, says that 40 cents out of every dollar spent during our occupation in  Iraq has gone to war contractors, according to an article by Chris Hedges of the Philadelphia Inquirer. According to Rep. John Murtha, “We got 126,000 contractors over there, some of them making more than the secretary of defense.”

The article says that companies like Blackwater are covered by a 2004 edict passed by American occupation authorities in Iraq that immunizes civilian contractors in Iraq from prosecution.

When we do leave Iraq, will these companies have an incentive to make peace and come home?
